Meet the Team!

A lot of our athletes headed out of town on Tuesday to celebrate Thanksgiving at home, but I was able to catch a few of them on video around campus to ask them a few personal questions. Watch the video and see if you have anything in common with our athletes.

Team Adventure in the ATL

When TJ Brancaccio's parents invited us over to their house for dinner following our meet at Georgia Tech, we did not know what we were in for (in more ways than one)! We were all anxious to see the window from which TJ shot deer, squirrels, and other neighborhood animals that innocently wandered through his back yard with his bow and arrow as he was growing up. Instead of a war zone, it was quite serene and peaceful at his house, and no one could move after consuming all of the ribs, barbeque, and desserts that the Brancaccios had awaiting our arrival. They have agreed to have us over for the next three years!!!

So we thought we were on our way back to High Point and were exiting the neighborhood when we heard a loud pop! Some say it was a flat tire caused by Coach Wilson's driving, while others claim they saw TJ hiding in a tree with his bow and arrow. We will let you decide.

The People in Atlanta are AWESOME! Nice Neighbors Came Out to Help!

And hour and a half later, we're all smiles again and ready for an uneventful ride home.

HPU All-Sports Awards Night

Last week, High Point celebrated the 2007-2008 Sports Seasons with its annual awards ceremony. Each year, the athletes get to vote on who they think is High Point's Sportsman/Sportswoman of the year. Congratulations to Sumiyya Hunter, who won this honor for the second year in a row. Sumiyya's peers think a lot of her and we do too! Sumiyya was also the female chosen to give the senior speech, and you can watch it below. The real Rudy was on campus to speak to our athletes, and he reminded us of the importance of dreaming. That's who we want to surround ourselves with: athletes who dream big!

The Steele Center by Monica

It's almost been a year since The Steele Athletic Center opened. If you haven't been inside, watch the mini-movie produced, directed, filmed, and inspired by our own freshman Monica Delizo.

This was the first year that the cross country and track teams had their own locker rooms, and the best part is that the Steele Center opens onto the track:)

Jason Jabaut Interview

One of the many things that's great about track & field is that at each meet we compete in, there are post-collegiate runners competing as well. Our athletes enjoy the opportunities to talk to, compete with, and run cool downs with these men and women who are competing for spots on our National teams. Listen to this interview with one such professional runner Jason Jabaut after his 1500 meter win at the Duke Invitational on April 4, 2008. Jason was a standout runner at Villanova. Hear his thoughts on his race that evening and his upcoming race schedule.

Sub-14

I've always liked the 5k at Raleigh Relays, maybe because it's where I pr'd back in the day. But also because the North Carolina March weather can be perfect for distance racing, it's an evening race under the lights, and there is usually a good field. Such was the case on Friday evening when Junior Tamas Kovacs ran to his new pr, High Point's new school record, and his first Regional qualifying mark.

I'm so excited for Tamas because he has been training well and was sick earlier in the week. In this race he made some great moves to stay with the lead pack, and it paid off. Taylor Milne a High Point graduate in 2005(?), and the former High Point record holder (14:03) was also down from Ontario for the 5k. Taylor is a 1500 meter specialist. Watch their post race interview is below.
